Hatteras GT63 Fish Tank Tops Three-Leg Los Sueños Signature Billfish Tournament Series in Costa Rica
The well-known offshore angling team led by Chris and Laura Jessen and Capt. Ben Horning on the Hatteras GT63 Fish Tank are overall Champions of the 2019 Los Sueños Triple Crown!
The three-leg, catch-and-release billfish tournament series, held off the Los Sueños Resort & Marina in Playa Herradura, Costa Rica, wrapped up on March 30th.
Team Fish Tank won Leg 1 of the series in January and came in 2nd in Leg 2 in February. This gave them a commanding lead on points going into Leg 3. The team came in 6th in the final leg but caught-and-released enough sailfish and marlin to hold on and win the Triple Crown – beating the next highest boat by 3,500 points!
“Congratulations to Team Fish Tank for their outstanding performance throughout this highly competitive tournament series,” said Hatteras President and CEO Kelly Grindle. “This makes it all the more exciting that Laura, Chris and Capt. Ben will be campaigning the new GT59 Hatterascal on the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts starting in May.
“This is going to take a while to sink in but what a season we had!” Laura Jessen said.
Team Fish Tank was on fire from the very start of the 2019 winter season in Costa Rica, winning the 1st Annual Los Sueños Ladies Only Tournament on January 15th. Laura and fellow angler Michelle Keeney caught and released a marlin and eight sailfish to take home that trophy.
Then came the team’s triumph in the three-leg Los Sueños Signature billfish tournament series, earning a total of 17,400 points while the next highest-scoring boats, Uno Mas and Sea Angel, earned 13,900 apiece.
“We won the Los Sueños Triple Crown! Five years ago, when we arrived here, I never thought I would utter those words,” Laura said. “I can’t believe how far we have come. We have fished a lot over the last few years and have had the opportunity to learn from the best. Everything just fell into place this year. It was our year. Our crew is outstanding. We couldn’t ask for a better captain or mates. They work so hard day in and out. They are dedicated and driven. We are a true TEAM. I respect and adore everyone on the boat, crew and anglers. We all bring something unique to the mix. Most importantly, we support one another; we are in sync; we laugh and we manage to find a way to have fun no matter how intense it gets in the cockpit. It’s been an incredible season.”
Starting in May, the Jessens and Capt. Ben will be campaigning the new GT59 Hatterascal at major billfish tournaments on the Gulf and East Coasts while the new Fish Tank, the first-ever GT65 Carolina, is being built at the Hatteras factory. Tight Lines, Team Hatteras!
