Hatteras

Construction Integrity

Hatteras built its reputation on bulletproof construction techniques, and its hull bottoms remain as rugged as ever today. All Hatteras hull bottoms are solid fiberglass, and you won't find any absorbent balsa core anywhere aboard a Hatteras. We use PVC non-absorbent foam core in the hull sides and superstructure to deliver a high strength-to-weight ratio.

Hatteras features a precise hull-to-superstructure "shoe box" fit, provided by a four-part bonding process of adhesive caulking, fiberglass bonding inside, monel screws every 3 inches and a stainless-steel rub rail.

Our stringer system is composed of all fiberglass members - no structural plywood is used in Hatteras stringers. Athwartship stringers made of PVC core encapsulated in fiberglass complete this grid-like stringer structure. Further, fiberglass ribs provide additional structural integrity to the hull and superstructure.

Engine beds are mounted to steel plates completely encapsulated in fiberglass stringers with anti-corrosive zinc plated bolts. Because Hatteras mounts the engines to the integrated stringer network instead of exposed corrosive I-beams, force is evenly distributed and vibration is reduced throughout the boat.

For bulkheads and decks, Hatteras uses state-of-the-art fiberglass vacuum-bagging techniques that provide structural and thermal advantages over plywood as well.

We construct all primary thru-hull fittings of anti-corrosive bronze. Then we take it one step further and imbed these thru-hulls in solid fiberglass. You will not find any plastic fittings or marine plywood backing in Hatteras construction.

All Hatteras fuel tanks are U.L.-approved - not many boatbuilders can make that claim. (U.L.-approved fuel tanks can mean lower insurance rates for you.) All fuel and water tanks feature a grid of fiberglass baffles, laminated and mechanically fastened to the tank, sealed with a fiberglass reinforced adhesive, then sealed again with fiberglass and resin. All tanks have bronze tank plates and fittings.

We construct our anchor chutes of 316L stainless steel - sheet metal anchor chutes lack durability and strength. All cleats are made of this same stainless steel.

All stanchions and cleats are mechanically fastened, using aluminum backing plates encapsulated into the laminate. Backing plates are drilled and tapped offering ease of removal if necessary.

From fiberglass hull bottoms to anti-corrosive bronze fittings, Hatteras Yachts reflect a commitment to continuously elevate the art of boatbuilding - doing it better and doing it stronger. This gives you the Hatteras Advantage.
